Profits of MNC

Filed under: Thoughts — pegasus @ 12:20 PM

In a international world how are the profits and revenue distributed among the various subsidiaries of an MNC? Usually all the offices are dedicated in manufacturing some component or the other of the same product-line. Hence it is impossible to account for the Value addition of each activity.
eg: Take the case of this hypothetical cell-phone giant.
1. The board and circuitry are designed in England.
2. The stylish casing is designed in Paris
3. The LCD display and GUI in Silicon Valley
4. The software is written by coolies in Bangalore
5. The chips are designed by Scandinavian office
6. They are manufactured in the Fab-lab of Taiwan, tested and assembled in Korea.
7. The assembly is done China
8. Sales are in America.
9. Promoter/Head quarters are in a separate country.

The phone costs 40$ and sells for 100$. So how is the 60$ profit and revenue distributed? To my surprise each of the 9 offices got a small percentage of the profit. While most of the profit (around 50$ per phone) was attributed to an office (which exists only on paper) at Bermudas. Just because it provided the company with a tax-holiday.

Which every country gives a tax-holiday seems to get all the profits and revenue. The company is not cooking any books; it has a legitimately registered investment company at Bermudas. By underreporting the profits of high tax centers, it maximizes the overall profits.

So next time a report says profitability of MNC is dipping etc., take it with a pinch of salt. Companies are in the business of making money. If their international arms were making as much losses as they are reporting they would have closed it down long ago.

Most international arms of Coke/Pepsi make losses. Simply because the overpriced syrup and royalty costs. Similarly some car manufacturer actually under-report revenue of their international arms so that their US factories have extra margins. Extra Margins is a advertising gimmick to demonstrate better manufacturing capabilities of USA and riding high on the patronage waves.

Who will have the window seat?

Has anybody visited a poultry farm? It is a stack of cube shaped cages in which the chicken can barely fit itself.
I always believe that offices/cube-farms are also similar containments for the workforce.
The world is never equal. Then why are offices standardized and equal?

The zeal to achieve standardization is so high that they kill all possible possibilities of enhancements.
1) Towards the periphery there are external windows which are a source of daylight (which improves productivity). But the cubicles next to it will have the standard partition. And Facilities will yell at you if you remove this partition.
2) In the center of a cube farm, there are usually pillars supporting the roof. Since they cannot fit an entire cube in it, conveniently they leave it blank and wasted. Can’t the designers make the neighboring cubicles bigger by one panel so that this extra space could be utilized? NOoooo! That is blasphemy.

If hotels can design rooms such that each room has a balcony facing outside, then why can’t offices?

Richest Indian

Filed under: Investing, Thoughts — pegasus @ 9:35 AM

India is riding on the boom of inflated stock prices. So the promoters whose companies are listed are being made paper billionaires and get their names listed in Forbes Richest Man List. While all the tycoons who stay away from stock market come nowhere in the list.

1) For a long time promoters Reliance Industries, Wipro, Infosys were being branded as the richest companies in India while Ratan Tata was no where to be seen. Simply because the Jewel in the Tata’s Crown, TCS (which is much bigger and valuable than Infosys and Wipro) as well as the Tata Sons are not listed. So their value was kept to ZERO.
2) Sahara Empire which is practically in all the businesses in India from Airlines to Media to Construction never figures in the Rich List.
3) People were unaware of the riches of DLF group until they started talking about their IPO. This was in spite of everybody realizing that most of Delhi’s (NCR) Planned Construction was undertaken by them.

The list goes on…..
Why:
Computing the value of a listed company is simple. You open a newspaper, find out the stock price, then you go to the BSE website find the promoter holding. Using a Calculator provided by Windows and press the Multiply Button and…
Wow…. You know how much Azim Premji is worth.

But Subroto Roy is worth nothing. Why?
1) His company (Sahara Group) is not listed so it is of zero value.
2) He owns properties, offices, real-estate all over the country, but who will take the pains to account for it.
3) He has invested in companies and deals across the globe, but I cannot compile the complete list of them.
4) I do not have enough time to go to the Income Tax office to get a clue of how much he earns.
5) If I hire an analyst (yes, based on the turnover and profits you can estimate its net worth) who will pay him.

The journalist and Media Analysts of today thinks that if it takes more than 60 seconds to collect their data, it is not worth it. Investigative Journalism means stalking the celebrities and visiting Page 3 parties to catch-up with the latest gossip instead of working under-cover to break a racket.

Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen. This is your captain PATEL
welcoming both seated and standing passengers on board of Air Deccan .

We apologize for the four-day delay in taking off, it was due to bad
Weather and partly due to the search for a missing tyre.

This is flight 717 to Mumbai. Landing there is not guaranteed, but we
will End up somewhere in India . And, if luck is in our favor, we may
even be landing on your village!

Air Deccan has an excellent safety-record. In fact, our safety standards
are so high, that even terrorists are afraid to fly with us! It is
with pleasure; I announce that, starting this year, over 30% of our
Passengers have reached their destination.

If our engines are too noisy for you, on passenger request, we can
arrange to turn them off. To make your free fall to earth pleasant and
memorable, we serve Complimentary DHARU and Wada pavw. For our
not-so-religious passengers, we are the only airline who can help you
find out if there really is a God!

We regret to inform you, that today’s in-flight movie will not be shown
as we forgot to record it from the television. However, for our movie
buffs, we will be flying right next to Kingfisher Airline, where their
movie will be visible from the right side of the cabin window.

There is no smoking allowed in this airplane. Any smoke you see in the
Cabin is only the early warning system on the engines telling us to
slow down!

In order to catch important landmarks, we try to fly as close as
possible. For the best view , if however, we go a little too close,
do let us know. Our enthusiastic co-pilot sometimes flies right through
the landmark!

Kindly be seated, keep your seat in an upright position for take-off
and fasten your seat-belt. For those of you who can’t find a seat-belt,
kindly Fasten your own belt to the arm of your seat. And, for those of
you who can’t find a seat, do not hesitate to get in touch with a
