A friend once asked me, what unites India.
The language, the culture, the clothes, everything is different…. The North thinks everybody in the south is a Madrasi, the south thinks everybody from north is a Bihari and hates him. What keeps the country together?
The only answer I could come up with was Hindi Cinema.
Irrespective of whether your mother tongue is Hindi or not, everybody watches a Hindi movie or two.
Some movies like Dus Kahaniyan, are entertaining… while some like Taare Zameen Par, also convey a social meaning.
But today I was really moved by the impact it has on international crowd.
My friend from Algéria , is not of Indian origin, nor can speak/understand Hindi. Yet, this does not stop her from appreciating them. She uses her knowledge of Arabic to understand the emotional dialogues, dance and song sequences.
Infact she liked the move Devdas so much that she created a poster she just created (with the last words of Devdas)
