brandy was the first distilled alcohol and it was developed in the 12th century (due to high shipping cost of voluminous alcohol). so prior to that wine had the highest alcoholic content amongst all commonly available sources of clean water.
man had learned that fire/heat was the best sanitizer, but somehow boiling water to arrest cholera did not happen till late 19th century (by then half of the population in world's cities including london had perished)
beer popularity was also because of the same reason... only more because it was cheaper.

There's a huge difference beetwen pump and steam espresso machines, and the bars of pressure in the machines (needed to compact the grounds when brewing). I had a cheap Melitta before; and now have a DeLonghi Magnifica 3300 which is unbelievable! It has a water reservoir and a bean reservoir; grinds beans fresh for each cup. In addition, you can make multiple cups, without waiting for the machine to cool down (a con with cheaper machines). It has a great frother too; and a reservoir to hold use grinds, so you aren't emptying them after each cup (another con with cheaper machines). Check out the stats for the Magnifica 3300. Yes, it's pricey, but you can find it New on eBay (with warranty still in box), and it's rated the highest of just about any other machine .

Sir, US President Eisenhover, a retired General himself, used to warn about the dangers of a "military-industry complex" and the resultant
dangers of corruption. Now India is waking up to the pernicious effect this has in our body politic. General V.K. Singh is to be commended in
this matter. His association with Anna Hazare is a step in the right direction.

Referring to the comment by Amelle above- Why is it that the Indian Government not strictly following the rules regarding foreign postings to
International organizations, UN military missions etc.It is understood that China for example is very strict in this matter. They recall their staff
once the stipulated time period is over, and give a chance to another Chinese nationals to take up the post being vacated. We must also ensure
fairness in future assignments. We hope Anna Hazare-Gen. V.K. Singh- Kiran Bedi -Justice Hegde group would look into this matter as well.

I just came across your atilcre on the appointment of NN Prasad in WIPO Geneva and hailing appointment of his wife Anjali Prasad in the same slot in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and their projected contribution to the current course of global IP and strengthening of Indian presence in WIPO. Sadly your assumptions are proved wrong:1. Within a short span of NN Prasad's arrival, India's dominant position has already been lost in the developing countries block. It is feared India's bargaining position in IP negotiations is going to be further weakened with the presence of his wife Mrs. Anjali NN Prasad in Geneva.!!2. Indian presence in WIPO is progressively depleted with the active connivance of NN Prasad. It started with the unceremonious ouster of Ram Kishan Singh, a junior official with over ten years of service, as reported by Ravi Kanth in Business Standard dated 21 July 2009. Subsequently Pushpendra Rai (a very senior Indian Government official) was exiled to an insignificant position in Singapore. Narender Sabharwal has already been served notice to pack-up and leave. It is also in the grapevine that the third Indian Official mentioned by you, Guriqbal Singh Jaiya, Senior Director, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Division, a Division which he has assiduously built up is going to have his wings cut very soon. All of this within a very short span of NN Prasad's arrival on the spot!!3. It is reported by Joe C Mathew, in Business Standard dated 09 August 2009 that the unethical appointment of NN Prasad in WIPO as Chef de cabinet of Francis Gurry, Director General, WIPO had flouted all the established procedures applicable to foreign postings of Indian Government officials; and the subsequent posting of his wife Anjali Prasad to the slot vacated by him in the Ministry of Commerce is reported to be to help cover up his misdeeds while he was in the Ministry. It is indeed strange that N.N.Prasad's appointment in WIPO was cleared in haste in the interregnum between outgoing minister Kamal Nath and incoming minister Ananad Sharma. Strange indeed are the ways of Indian officialdom!!4. The added role of ex-Ambassador Swaspawan Singh in these episodes have not been highlighted. It appears for his role in undermining India's position and interests he has been amply rewarded with a lucrative contract in WIPO for a suspect project with dubious terms of reference. Indian staff in WIPO and the Indian community in Geneva are livid at these developments.5.An urgent inquiry need to be conducted by Minister Anand Sharma and the Parliamentary Committee before a hue and cry is raised in Parliament and since media is already focused on these matters.

I was not the only customer who felt the pduorce was over-watered. HE told ME that customers tell him vitamins and minerals are washed away with water. That's what I've said to your employees for years. Some literally water it like a yard in summer, talking to customers and not paying attention. He told me to say something. I said I've talked to employees, emailed, left notes til I realized NO ONE WILL DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.Water should never be dripping off greens. I've set them in my cart and they are still wet when I check out, nearly an hour later.I wonder if the pduorce personnel actually ever eat a salad or use fresh veggies in any capacity?I told him I buy most of my pduorce at the farmer's markets where the pduorce is out in the fresh air for HOURS and NEVER SPRAYED with WATER.Farmer's market pduorce lasts for many days longer than the Co-Op's. I am single, money always tight, and I see no reason why the Co-Op, like other stores, insist on drenching greens!Have you looked at green onions, spinach, beet greens? I won't buy green onions at the Co-Op cos they should last a week, but usually many of the green part are already wilting.I had to put ALL my greens in various colanders for over an hour at home. I had to wipe my beets with paper towels and set out to dry too. I can't get as much organic pduorce at my local farmer's market. So once a week I venture to the Co-Op. I make juices and rather use organic. I just don't know what to do. I want to support the Co-Op, but what about helping those of us who really want fresh organic veggies to last longer, but can't because your employees insist on over-watering.So sad, but think how many other customers buy at the outdoor farmer's markets instead of the Co-Op? You are losing money.Do you care? I do . . .

Our suspicions of Gaddafi's clmias about the death of his son and grand children are further strengthened by:1- It was claimed that 3 children (Hanibal's, Muhammed's, and Aisha's) were also killed in the attack. Last night, however, Libyan tv showed what appeared to be two adult corpses and only 1 child corpse. All were fully shrouded so no one could make any positive identification.2- It is highly unlikely that all the Gaddafi families were in the same place at the same time given the situation in Libya. It is not exactly party or picnic time in Tripoli for them!3- The 2 adults corpses shown on Libya tv last night were extremely swollen indicating that these have been dead for some time much longer than the 24 hours since the attack in question. Thus, even if one of the corpses was Saif's he could have been killed some time ago in a completely different incident.4- During today's funeral, I was only able to notice one coffin (claimed to be that of Saif Alarab). What happened to the others?5- In 1986 Gaddafi produced a similar claim that one of his children (Hana) was killed in the US attack on his house. It turned out to be false and Hana is still alive and is a grownup now.6- The atmosphere of today's funeral, which was a mix of chaos and bad taste, did not give a feel of real loss or mourning to the ruling dynasty and its supporters.7- As I write these comments, the Libyan tv is showing live coverage of singing and dancing idiots in Bab Alaziziya (Gaddafi's compound). Again dismissing the likelihood of the claim.

I have to agree, the last ones with her son just don't have the same spark. I've only read one. It's just not his world, and not his thing (even though she helps him of cosure with the plot and all that). I hope eventually he goes on to write something that is more him . I met him at DragonCon this year, very nice guy. He's writing to keep the world of Pern alive, because he's worried that when his mother passes the world of Pern will die with her. I admire the sentiment. But he needn't worry it will live on, I have no doubt.
