Indian Cinema

A friend once asked me, what unites India.
The language, the culture, the clothes, everything is different…. The North thinks everybody in the south is a Madrasi, the south thinks everybody from north is a Bihari and hates him. What keeps the country together?

The only answer I could come up with was Hindi Cinema.
Irrespective of whether your mother tongue is Hindi or not, everybody watches a Hindi movie or two.
Some movies like Dus Kahaniyan, are entertaining… while some like Taare Zameen Par, also convey a social meaning.

But today I was really moved by the impact it has on international crowd.
My friend from Algéria , is not of Indian origin, nor can speak/understand Hindi. Yet, this does not stop her from appreciating them. She uses her knowledge of Arabic to understand the emotional dialogues, dance and song sequences.

Infact she liked the move Devdas so much that she created a poster she just created (with the last words of Devdas)

  1. Nice poster! 🙂 Indian cinema is quite popular in African countries and even in Russsia. I have had many international friends recite the story of DDLJ to me. Always makes me smile. LOL.

  2. Ankur I was surprised to see that Egyptians who don’t understand Hindi are big fans of Amitabh Bachchan.Hindi films have a big following in Srilanka where Hindi is not understood. Arjuna Ranatunga once said in an interview that as a child he used to see 1 Hindi film everyday with his mother.
